Monkey Mart Controls, Tips and Fixes for Chromebook

Published · 3 min read

Monkey Mart was built for phones first, and on a phone you drag a finger to steer. In the browser on a Chromebook the same game switches to the keyboard the moment you press a key: the tutorial prompt changes from "tap anywhere" to "use arrows to move", and from then on the arrow keys or WASD move the monkey. Nothing else is bound. There is no pick-up button, no sell button, no menu shortcut; every action in the game is "walk there and stand still".

Standing still is the action

This is the part new players miss. The monkey only harvests, stocks, builds and serves while it is not moving, so tapping a key to "help" a harvest along actually cancels it. Walk to the trees, let go of the keys, and watch the stack on the monkey's head grow. The same goes for the checkout: stand behind the counter and stay there until the queue is gone. If the monkey is next to something and nothing happens, you are usually a step too far away; nudge one key once and let go again.

Keeping the queue short

Customers wander to whichever shelf has stock, take a product and go to the register. Three or four of them waiting is fine; when the line reaches the door, customers start leaving without paying. Two things fix it. Before you hire a cashier, make the register the last stop of every trip: trees, shelf, register, repeat, so the queue is served every loop. After you hire one, upgrade the cashier's speed before anything else in the staff menu, because a slow cashier is the same bottleneck with a hat on.

Do not over-stock one shelf

A shelf holds a limited number of items and the monkey's stack has its own cap. Carrying twenty bananas to a shelf that has room for eight wastes the trip. If a shelf is still nearly full, skip it and go build the next arrow or serve the register instead. Once workers are hired they handle the constant top-ups anyway, and your own trips should go to whichever shelf is empty.

Spend on speed early

The single best early purchase in the monkey menu is the Boots of Speed. Every part of the loop is walking, so a faster monkey earns more per minute than any shelf until the store is fully staffed. Stack capacity is the second pick; it matters most once the machines arrive and each trip carries a more valuable product.

Save games and common problems

The game saves in your browser's storage on this site, so coming back to the same computer and the same browser picks up the same store. A different Chromebook, an incognito window or a cleared browser history starts fresh; there is no account and no cloud save, so if the school wipes profiles at night, expect a new store in the morning.

If the page shows the loading bar and stops, reload once; the game is about 8 MB and a slow connection can time out the first fetch. If the arrow keys scroll the page instead of moving the monkey, click inside the game once to give it focus. Sound comes back with the speaker button in the settings cog at the top right. And if the monkey is stuck against a shelf, move away for a second and walk back: the collision resets.
